Network Engineer

The IMDEA Software Institute (Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies in Software Development Technologies) is a non-profit research institute promoted by the Regional Government of Madrid, Spain. In the same manner that RedIRIS manages the National Network for Universities and Research Centers, Madrid Research Network (REDIMadrid) is the data network for research and higher education that provides high-speed connectivity to universities and research centers within the Madrid region.

We are seeking a Network Engineer to join our stable team in charge of managing, planning new deployments including an emerging quantum communication infrastructure. This includes the activities involved in European iniciatives like the project OpenQKD. The ideal candidate will have over 7 years of proven experience in skills amount the position, we are seeking a candidate with a global vision of a service provider, understanding how it works from the fiber side to the sides of the services.

The tasks to be carried out will be, among others:

• Maintaining and operating network equipment in a wide area network.
• Maintaining and operating security equipment.
• Configure and maintenance network tools to monitor core network.
• Maintaining and operating optics communication, and optics tools.
• Server configuration and administration.
• Development of REDIMadrid, proposing improvement solutions.

Requirements

Candidates should meet the following requirements:

• At least 7 years of work experience and a Bachelor’s or Associates degree in Telecommunications, Computer Engineering or related field.
• Good knowledge of IP equipment in service provider environments (Juniper is a plus).
• Good knowledge in security technologies in service provider environments.
• Knowledge in design and maintenance optics communication (DWDM) (CIENA equipment is a plus).
• Knowledge of Linux/Unix environments, Scripting languages, automating tools and data interchange formats.
• Experience in international projects.
• Capable of proposing improvement solutions and be a team player.
• Fluent in English and Spanish (speaking, reading and writing).

The following are desirable qualifications:

• Experience with the following standards and protocols: MEF, Ethernet, eBGP, OSPF, QoS, MPLS, L2VPN/L3VPN, eVPN, NG-mVPN, VXLAN.
• Knowledge in networks monitoring tools (grafana, zabbix, optical tools).
• Knowledge of security technologies: Firewall, Anti-DDOS, Siem.
• Experience with the optics standards and protocols: OTN, OCH, OTU, ODU, WDM, control plane, planning tools, Carrier Ethernet, GMPLS or similar.
• Scripting languages, e.g., Python, Perl, and automating tools, e.g. Ansible and Jenkins.
• Knowledge of data interchange formats such as XML and JSON and familiarity with Docker / Kubernetes, Mesos.
• Linux/Unix environments systems and development.
