Georgios Portokalidis, Associate Research Professor at IMDEA Software, has received the Test of Time Award at the Annual Computer Security Applications Conference (ACSAC), one of the leading international conferences in cybersecurity.
The award was presented during the edition held in Hawaii and recognizes the lasting relevance over the past 15 years of his paper “Paranoid Android: Versatile Protection for Smartphones”.
The award-winning paper introduced a novel idea at the time. The Paranoid Android system is based on recording the execution trace of applications running on a smartphone and later replaying it on a powerful cloud server, where complex and resource-intensive security mechanisms can be applied to detect intrusion attempts. This approach anticipated key trends in mobile security and cloud computing that are now widely studied and adopted. The work was co-authored by Georgios Portokalidis, together with Philip Homburg, Kostas Anagnostakis, and Herbert Bos.
At IMDEA Software, we would like to congratulate Georgios Portokalidis and all the authors on this well-deserved international recognition.
