The ACM Symposium on Operating Systems Principles (SOSP) is one of the premier international conferences in computer systems research, bringing together researchers from across operating systems, distributed systems, cloud computing, security, and emerging systems technologies. The research group led by Prof. Thaleia Dimitra Doudali at the IMDEA Software Institute had a strong presence at the conference.
Research Presentations.
Two research projects from the group were presented during the SOSP 2026 Poster Session. Georgia Christofidi presented her work “Carbon-Aware and Cost-Effective Geo-Distribution for Latency-Critical Microservices” in collaboration with Telefonica Research and co-authored with Francisco Álvarez-Terribas, Ioannis Roumpos, Nicolas Kourtellis, Jesus Omaña Iglesias, and Thaleia Dimitra Doudali. The project targets the challenge of enabling environmentally sustainable operations for geographically constrained latency-critical microservices. It enables significant reductions in carbon emissions in a cost-effective manner that preserves high application performance.
Panagiotis Pennas presented his work “Mitigating Prefix Caching Side Channels in Multi-Tenant LLM Serving Systems”, co-authored with the IMDEA Software researchs Konstantinos Papaioannou, Marco Guarnieri, and Thaleia Dimitra Doudali. The work investigates security risks arising from prefix caching in multi-tenant large language model serving systems and explores approaches to mitigating side-channel attacks while maintaining the performance benefits of caching.
Importantly, both works will appear as full papers at the 2026 Middleware conference, taking place in Tarragona, Spain, and both systems software will be open-sourced to facilitate adoption by the research community.
From the IMDEA Poster Competition to SOSP and Middleware.
Both Georgia Christofidi and Panagiotis Georgios Pennas were among the winners of the IMDEA Software Institute Poster Competition 2026, where their research was recognized for its scientific contribution and presentation.
Their participation at SOSP 2026 represents the continuation of that achievement, giving the students an opportunity to present their work to the international systems research community. The fact that both projects will also be published as full papers at Middleware 2026 further underscores the breadth and impact of the research developed within the group.
Service to the Community.
Beyond the research presented at the conference, Prof. Thaleia Dimitra Doudali contributed to the organization of SOSP 2026 as the conference’s Student Scholarship Chair and as a member of the Program Committee.
The participation of the IMDEA Software Institute at SOSP 2026 highlights the group’s continued contributions to cutting-edge systems research, while also reflecting its commitment to developing the next generation of researchers and contributing to the broader systems research community.
