IMDEA Software Researchers Help Strengthen Spain’s Women in Computing Community

event

On October 20, 2026, the 2nd Workshop of the Women in High Performance Computing (WHPC) MAR Chapter took place at CIEMAT in Madrid, alongside JURES 2026, the 20th Users’ Conference of the Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES), which brings together users and researchers working with Spain’s supercomputing infrastructure.

Prof. Thaleia Dimitra Doudali, served as the workshop’s local organizer and is a member of the MAR Chapter’s organizing committee. The chapter is part of the global Women in HPC organization, and aims to promote diversity and inclusion, connect and empower women in high-performance computing through technical workshops, panel discussions, networking, and opportunities for collaboration.

As part of the workshop’s technical program, Georgia Christofidi, a PhD student in Prof. Doudali’s research group, presented her work on sustainable cloud computing, where she builds carbon-aware and cost-effective systems for geo-distributing latency-critical microservices (1).

The workshop featured technical talks by researchers from IMDEA Networks, Telefónica, and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), providing opportunities to exchange research ideas, build professional connections, and strengthen the community of women in computing. Prof. Doudali is committed to advancing women’s representation in STEM and is an advocate for diversity and inclusion in academia. She volunteers as part of the organizing team of the Greek Women in STEM NGO and serves as the elected Secretary of the ACM-W Greece Chapter. She has also served as an elected Ombud at the IMDEA Software Institute.
