Research internships at the CLIP group in program analysis, verification, optimization, language design and parallelism

The IMDEA Software Institute (Madrid, Spain) invites applications for research internships.

Selected candidates will work under the supervision of Manuel Hermenegildo, Manuel Carro, Pedro López, José Francisco Morales, within the CLIP group at IMDEA Software. The topic of the research, to be determined based on the common interests of the candidate and the supervisor(s), will be in the areas of:

• Static analysis and verification: Inferring and checking program behavior before execution, including (non-functional) properties such as memory, time, energy, etc. Supporting higher order and parallel/concurrent programs. Combining static and dynamic assertion checking.
• Optimization and program transformation: Converting a program into another with different properties (performance, (de)-obfuscation). Partial evaluation.
• Programming language design: New directions for static/dynamic languages, and novel approaches for multiparadigm programming, combining procedural, functional, constraint and logic programming, distributed/concurrent execution, etc.
• Compilers and VMs: Native code generation, JIT compilers, optimizing compilation, abstract/virtual machines.
• Applications in: optimization, granularity control, blockchain, AI, etc.

Who should apply?

Applicants should be final year BSc or MSc/PhD students in computer science, mathematics or a related discipline. Proven top programming skills as well as ability to understand and develop algorithms are required. Familiarity with logic and formal methods will be considered as a plus.

Working at IMDEA Software

The positions are based in Madrid, Spain, where the IMDEA Software Institute is situated. The institute provides for travel expenses and an internationally competitive stipend. The working language at the institute is English. Knowledge of Spanish is not required.

Dates

The internship duration is intended to be for 4-6 months (with some flexibility). The ideal starting period is from September 2019.
